You can choose your luck. At the beginning of this chart, I chose Brazil (EWZ) as an alternative to GLD. Either choice was luck. More on taking the luck out of the choosing in another minute.
Note that Brazil doubled my total gain. The message here is that there are alternatives to gold that are better hedges against inflation--sometimes much better!--than gold is. This is one of them.
